  1. Agreement
These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and Unfolding Ltd. ("Unfolding", "we", "us") about your use of the Unfolding app. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
  2. Who can use Unfolding
You must be at least 18 years old. Unfolding is currently offered in the United States.
  3. What Unfolding is, and what it isn't
Unfolding is a personal journaling and wellness app. It is not medical care, therapy, counseling or a crisis service. It does not diagnose or treat any condition, and it cannot monitor what you write or respond in an emergency. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact local emergency services right away. In the US, you can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
  4. AI-generated content
Responses to your writing, your daily mantra and personal audio are generated automatically by artificial intelligence. They can be inaccurate, incomplete or unsuitable for your situation, and they are not professional, medical, legal or financial advice. Use your own judgment about any suggestion. If a response seems harmful or offensive, please tell us at [email protected].
  5. Your account
Keep your sign-in details private. You're responsible for activity on your account. Let us know if you think someone else has accessed it.
  6. Your content
You own what you write. You give Unfolding permission to store, process and transmit your content only as needed to provide the app to you, including sending it to the service providers described in our Privacy Policy. We don't sell your content, use it for advertising or use it to train AI models. You can delete your content at any time.
  7. Acceptable use
Don't use Unfolding for anything unlawful. Don't try to access other people's accounts or data, interfere with or overload the service, get around usage limits or security measures, or reverse engineer the app except where the law allows it.
  8. Availability and limits
Unfolding is currently free. AI features have daily usage limits and may sometimes be unavailable. We may change, pause or discontinue features. If we discontinue the app, we'll try to give you reasonable notice so you can keep a copy of your writing.
  9. Our intellectual property
The app, its design and its included content, such as practices and audio, belong to Unfolding or its licensors. These Terms give you a personal, non-transferable right to use the app for your own non-commercial purposes.
  10. Disclaimers
The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We don't guarantee that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, or that AI-generated content will be accurate or suitable.
  11. Limitation of liability

Privacy Policy

The short version

  • Unfolding is a private journal. Your writing is used to give you responses, a daily mantra and personal audio. It is never used for advertising, never sold, and never used by us to train AI models.
  • To write those responses, relevant journal entries are sent to AI service providers. The providers are named below, with what each one keeps.
  • Your personal audio recordings stay on your phone. We don't upload them.
  • You can delete individual entries, or your whole account and its data, from inside the app.
  • Unfolding is for adults 18 and older in the United States. It is not a medical or crisis service.
  1. Who this policy covers
This policy explains how Unfolding Ltd. handles information in the Unfolding app for Android and in the messages you send us. Unfolding is intended only for people 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
  2. Information we collect
    Information you give us:
    • Account details: your email address and password. Your password is handled by Google Firebase Authentication; we never see it.
    • Profile and preferences: your name, if you choose to give it, how you like to be spoken to, what you'd like to work on, and your tone and focus preferences.
    • Journal entries: title, text, emotions you select, and the time you wrote.
    • Responses to your writing and your daily mantra, and whether each response was delivered.
    • Support messages you send us by email.
Information created as you use the app:
    • Personalization notes: short AI-written summaries of themes in your recent writing, for example insights, current challenges and recent progress, plus the dates of the entries they came from. They keep responses relevant without re-reading your whole history.
    • Activity records: simple records of what you did and when, for example that you played a practice.
    • Earlier features: if you used earlier versions of Unfolding, records such as Growth Paths or weekly reports.
    • Usage counts: a daily count of AI requests per account, used to enforce limits and control costs. It contains your account ID and a number, not your writing.
Information stored only on your phone: your personal audio recordings and their scripts, unsent drafts, favorites, your reminder time and temporary copies of recent records. We don't upload your personal audio or back it up, so uninstalling the app or clearing its data removes it.

Technical information: to keep the service secure, the app uses Google's Firebase App Check and Play Integrity to confirm that requests come from the genuine Unfolding app on a genuine device. Our providers necessarily process technical data such as IP addresses and device attestation tokens when your phone connects to them.

What we don't collect: your location, contacts, photos or advertising ID. We don't record audio from your microphone. The app contains no advertising, and no third-party analytics or tracking tools.
  3. Your writing is sensitive, and we treat it that way
Journal entries can include things about your health, mental health, relationships and other personal matters. We use this information only to provide Unfolding's features to you. We don't sell it or share it for advertising, and we don't use it to train AI models or let our AI providers do so.

People at Unfolding don't read your writing. The only exceptions are when you ask us to look into a specific problem and give us permission, when we must investigate a security incident, or when the law requires it.
  4. How we use information
    • To provide the app: saving and syncing your journal, showing your history, and playing practices and saved audio.
    • To generate responses to your writing, your daily mantra and personal audio (see section 5).
    • To personalize: using your preferences and personalization notes so responses fit you.
    • To keep the service safe, reliable and affordable: verifying requests, preventing abuse and enforcing daily usage limits.
    • To answer messages you send us.
    • To meet legal obligations and enforce our Terms.
  5. How the AI features work
Unfolding uses AI in three places:
    • Response to a journal entry. When you save an entry, it is sent for a response, along with a small selection of your recent entries (up to 10, prioritizing roughly the last month), your personalization notes and your preferences.
    • Daily mantra. A few recent entries and your notes are used to write a short daily mantra.
    • Personal audio, only when you ask for it. Your recent writing, notes and preferences are used to write a short personal script. That script, not your journal entry, is then turned into speech.
About once a day, recent entries are also used to update your personalization notes.

These requests go through our server, which checks that you're signed in and within your usage limits, then passes them to the provider:
    • Text generation (responses, mantra, notes, audio scripts): DeepInfra, running the DeepSeek language model. DeepInfra states that request content is held only in memory while it's processed, and is not stored, logged or used for training.
    • Speech generation (personal audio): OpenAI, which receives only the audio script. OpenAI states that this data is not used for training. It may be kept for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deleted.
Our server doesn't keep a copy of your writing or of the AI's output. It passes the request to the provider and returns the result to your phone.

AI can be wrong. Responses are generated automatically and are not professional advice. Unfolding is not a crisis service and cannot monitor what you write. If you're in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact emergency services right away, or call or text 988 in the US.
  6. Who we share information with
We share information only with service providers that run parts of Unfolding for us, and only for that purpose:
    • Google (Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, App Check): sign-in, our cloud database (stored in the United States) and app verification. This covers your account, profile, journal, responses, notes and activity.
    • Cloudflare: runs our server, which routes AI requests and counts daily usage. Cloudflare also forwards email sent to [email protected] to our inbox.
    • DeepInfra: AI text generation, receiving selected entries, notes and preferences with each request.
    • OpenAI: speech generation, receiving the personal-audio script with each request.
    • Google (Gmail): hosts the inbox where your support emails arrive.
    • Google Play: distributes the app and its updates under Google's own policies.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect the safety and rights of users or others, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets. In a sale, this policy would continue to apply to your information, or you would be notified.
  7. How long we keep information
    • Account, journal and related records are kept until you delete them or delete your account.
    • When you delete a journal entry, we also delete personalization notes that were built from it. New notes are later built from your remaining writing.
    • When you delete your account, your account and its records are removed from our database right away, and Unfolding's personal data is removed from that phone.
    • Our database is backed up weekly, and backups are kept for 14 days. Deleted information can remain in a backup for up to 14 days before it expires. Backups are used only to recover from failures.
    • AI providers: DeepInfra doesn't store requests. OpenAI may keep audio scripts for up to 30 days.
    • Support emails are kept as long as needed to help you and to meet legal obligations.
  8. Your choices, and deleting your account
    • Delete entries at any time: open the entry in the Journal and choose Delete.
    • Delete your account and all its data in the app: You → Profile → Delete account and data. You'll be asked to confirm your password.
    • If you can't use the app, for example because you've uninstalled it, email [email protected] from your account's email address with the subject "Delete my account". We'll delete the account and its data within 30 days.
    • Get a copy of your data: in-app export isn't available yet. Email us and we'll send you a copy within 30 days.
    • Reminders are optional, set up on your phone, and can be turned off in the app or in Android settings.
    • Personal audio is created only when you ask for it.
Depending on your state of residence, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or get a copy of your personal information, and to appeal if we decline a request. We don't sell personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, or use it for profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. To make a request, email [email protected]. We'll respond within 30 days, and may need to confirm your identity first.
  9. Security
Information travels between the app, our server and our providers over encrypted connections, and our database is encrypted at rest. Database access rules allow each account to reach only its own records. Our server accepts AI requests only from signed-in users of the genuine app, and never logs the content of your writing. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we'll notify you as required by law.
  10. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we'll update the effective date above and let you know in the app or by email before the changes apply.
